This is the time of year when wrapping goes into full swing, creating several hazards for your cat. Ribbon, string, gift paper, and tape are all likely to pique your cat’s curiosity, appearing as the perfect play thing. However, when ingested these elements of holiday cheer become very dangerous.

One end of a long string or ribbon can wrap around the base of your cat’s tongue, while the rest is moved down the digestive tract into the intestines. The anchored string will cause the intestines to wrap around them selves, causing major internal havoc. If fully swallowed these items may create a blockage in the digestive tract. This will prevent your cat from being able to fully digest food or cause impaction.

Any of these situations may result in the need for emergency surgery or worse, death. So we suggest keeping your cat away from where you are wrapping or unwrapping gifts as well as thoroughly cleaning up all scraps.
