Doggy Genes…or Canine Genetics to be Proper

I recently read an interesting series of articles about canine genetics. There is a new test available for dogs to determine their genetic makeup. Its primary purpose is to identify the heritage of mixed breed dogs. Why would we care about the breeds that were mixed together to make our adorable Heinz 57 variety dog? Well, we might want to understand which diseases this mixed breed is most likely to suffer from. There are some diseases, such as certain types of cancer, that individual breeds are more likely to suffer from than other breeds. Knowing what breeds make up an individual dog will help veterinarians and pet owners choose the most appropriate screening exams in order to detect problems early, usually resulting in more successful treatment.

Another purpose behind the test is so that pet owners can identify the different personalities that might be at work in their mixed breed dog. This may not be important to most pet owners, but some pet owners that are interested in why their dog is behaving a certain way might be willing to spend the money to see if there is a gene-based answer.

As scientists work hard to unlock the information contained in the genetic code of all species, they are creating some interesting and potentially useful technologies.

Losing Dog Pounds

Everyone knows the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle by exercising and eating properly. It’s just as important to keep your pet in a healthy routine as well! Avoid over-feeding your pooch and include your four-legged pal when you walk or jog around the neighborhood.

A recent study found that owners who exercise with their dogs are healthier and usually more committed to a weight loss or exercise program than people who do not exercise with their pets. Consequently, resulting benefits apply not only to the four-legged member of the family, but also the two legged member. Dogs are notorious for wishing to please their masters… and what better way then by contributing to your healthy lifestyle?

Another great reason to help your dog lose weight: dogs that lose weight and reach an ideal, lean condition will experience a decrease in lameness from joint pain. Dogs are much like us and can suffer immensely from being overweight. So do you both a favor and involve your pooch in your weekly exercise regime!

Diamond Pet Foods encourages pet owners to use caution when walking or running while sharing a roadway. Be sure your pet has a proper restraint and avoid jogging to music so you can listen for traffic!

Beware the Full Moon… Your Pet May Be in Danger

A recent study published by the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association determined a correlation between pet trips to the Emergency Room and the lunar cycle. For some unknown reason, cat owners are ending up in Veterinary ERs 23% more often during or close to the full moon. Dog owners are discovering similar happenings as canine trips to the Emergency Room jump up 28%!

No cause has been determined for this bizarre phenomenon. However, one speculation is that owners and their pets are out more during full moons due to the increased light. While this may explain some increased trauma injuries to canines, it gives no explanation for the rise in feline injuries.

Furthermore, the increase in ER visitations during the full moon also account for a surge in pet illness. While it is possible that these additional outdoor excursions could be a source for increased illness due to exposure to additional elements, it seems unlikely. Researchers, scientists, and veterinarians alike continue to look into this uncanny occurrence for possible explanations.

Diamond Pet Foods encourages all owners to utilize caution when walking with your pets at night. Keep your pet properly leashed, bring a flashlight, and use reflective accessories if possible.
