Beware the Full Moon… Your Pet May Be in Danger
A recent study published by the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association determined a correlation between pet trips to the Emergency Room and the lunar cycle. For some unknown reason, cat owners are ending up in Veterinary ERs 23% more often during or close to the full moon. Dog owners are discovering similar happenings as canine trips to the Emergency Room jump up 28%!
No cause has been determined for this bizarre phenomenon. However, one speculation is that owners and their pets are out more during full moons due to the increased light. While this may explain some increased trauma injuries to canines, it gives no explanation for the rise in feline injuries.
Furthermore, the increase in ER visitations during the full moon also account for a surge in pet illness. While it is possible that these additional outdoor excursions could be a source for increased illness due to exposure to additional elements, it seems unlikely. Researchers, scientists, and veterinarians alike continue to look into this uncanny occurrence for possible explanations.
Diamond Pet Foods encourages all owners to utilize caution when walking with your pets at night. Keep your pet properly leashed, bring a flashlight, and use reflective accessories if possible.
